Crawl (Carry Me Through) | Quinn & Sam

coach-sevans:

Sam sat sprawled out across the couch, exhausted with a mixture of his unsuccessful trip to Connecticut and Quinn’s visit earlier. Since then he’d been on/off napping and knew he’d probably be falling asleep on the couch tonight. Jumping a little at the sound of his doorbell ringing, the blonde wondered who on earth was visiting at this time. Probably Rachel, he thought as he got up and groggily walked over to answer the door. He couldn’t have been more wrong. The sight in front of him actually frightened him a little. Quinn was sobbing, she practically fell into his arms and her face was so blotchy, it seemed as though she’d been crying for hours.

“Quinn?” He asked cautiously, wrapping his arms tightly around her after he swung the door shut. Sam’s instant reaction was to just cover her completely and keep her safe - make her feel safe. Whatever happened had obviously devastated her enough to come to him when she had no cover with her parents anymore. The blonde had never seen his girlfriend cry this much and it broke his head to witness. “Hey, it’s okay. It’s alright, I’ve got you,” he assured her strongly, cradling her head to his chest as he stood with his arms tightly around her for a few more moments. “Look at me,” he spoke quietly, pulling back to look down at her, still keeping her body pinned to his. “What hap-” he began to ask before noticing a significantly darker red blotch on her cheek. Bringing his fingers up to touch it gently, he looked down to her quickly - his eyes demanding an explanation.

Hey, it’s okay. It’s alright, I’ve got you. His words resonated with her and soon, her sobs dwindled into sniffles. She still had Sam. She hugged him tighter, feeling incredibly safe in his arms. He made her believe that everything would be okay. She averted her gaze from him when he looked down at her, feeling a little ashamed for being so incredibly weak. When his eyes strayed to her cheek, she bit her lip nervously, knowing that he would ask about the big red mark. Quinn flinched as he brushed his fingers against the raw skin. She sniffled, taking a moment to find the right words. “My parents found out about us and my dad got really upset,” she explained to him, but she felt the need to defend her father immediately afterwards, although she had no idea why. “I deserved it though.” Quinn was starting to believe that she did. “I said some things in the heat of the moment that I shouldn’t have. I…”

She looked up at him, her eyes brimming with tears again. “I’m sorry, Sam,” she apologized to him. “I’m usually not so careless, but he got a hold of my phone and…” She brought a hand up to wipe away her tears. She was all over the place right now. “He gave me half an hour to pack my things. My parents want nothing to do with me anymore,” she informed him. “He…He said I was a failure, an embarrassment…I didn’t know where else to go.” And then, she burst into tears again, unable to stop crying no matter how hard she tried.

Crawl (Carry Me Through) | Quinn & Sam

All Quinn could think about right now was getting to Sam’s place. She needed him to hold her right now, to assure her that everything would be okay, that they were going to get through this together. Knowing her father, he was already plotting to make their lives and more specifically, his life a living hell. She turned off the ignition and got out of her car, not bothering to fix herself up, even though she was well aware that she looked like a mess. One glance in her side mirror and she could see how terrible she looked. Her hair was all over the place, her eyes were red and puffy from her incessant crying, and as she turned her head to the side, she could see the huge, red blotch her dad had left on her skin. She reached a hand up to touch her cheek and winced. It still hurt. Clearly, her dad had really been furious with her.

Leaving her bags in the car because she really didn’t need them yet, she practically ran to the front door, hurrying up the stone steps. She rang his doorbell, her eyes starting to water again as her father’s words rang in her ears. No, you’re nothing to me or your mother anymore…You are the disappointment here! You are the embarrassment in this family! By the time Sam opened the door, she was crying again and she stepped wordlessly into his arms, wrapping her arms tightly around his waist. She tried to tell Sam what had happened, but was suddenly unable to find the words. All she could do was stand there in his arms, sobbing into his shirt.

Quinn muttered under her breath as she headed downstairs again to look for her cell phone. She had been looking for the damn thing for the last three hours. Where had she left it? She had already checked with Sam in case she had left her phone at his place, but he had insisted that he hadn’t seen it and she had searched her room at least a billion times. Maybe she should try the living room again. When she noticed that her parents were watching TV in there, Quinn decided to change her trajectory, turning on her heels and heading toward the kitchen instead. She stopped in her tracks, however, when she heard her dad’s voice from behind her. Uh oh. She could tell just from his tone that he was upset with her. Crap. What had she done now?
“Hold on, Quinn,” he said, beckoning his daughter back into the living room. “We need to talk.”
Instantly, the blonde felt a fluttering in her stomach and not the good kind either. She started to rack her brain for anything she might have done lately that had upset her dad. She had been meeting curfew…She had gotten an A on that history test on Thursday…She had been coming straight home after school unless she had had Cheerios practice or a club meeting…She bit down nervously on her lower lip as she continued to ponder. What had she done wrong?
“Are you looking for this?” he asked her, holding up her cell phone for her to see.
Quinn let out a sigh of relief, smiling at him. She almost wanted to laugh at herself at how silly she had been just ten seconds earlier. Her dad wasn’t upset with her. She had completely misread his tone of voice.
“Yes! I’ve been looking for that for the past three hours. Thank you, daddy,” she answered him brightly, reaching for her phone.
A look of confusion passed over her face when Russell kept the phone out of her grasp. When her mom reached for the remote afterwards and turned off the TV, that awful fluttering in her stomach returned. Something was definitely wrong. She looked from her mom to her dad to her cell phone gripped tightly in his hand and that’s when it hit her. Oh no.
“Is there something you’d like to tell us?” her dad spoke up and Quinn’s instinct was to run, but she found herself completely rooted to the living room floor.
She started to shake as a mix of emotions began to bubble up inside her. Did he know? Had he read her text messages? Did he see that picture she had sent to Sam recently? How much of her privacy had he invaded? Then again, did it matter how much? If her dad had seen just one set of texts, she was screwed and not in the way she liked either. She took a breath and told herself to calm down inside her head. At this point, she didn’t even know what her dad was so upset about. Maybe it had absolutely nothing to do with the contents of her cell phone or her relationship with Sam. She turned to look at her mother, hoping that she would give her some sort of clue as to what was going on, but Judy avoided her gaze, looking down at her lap instead. Now, Quinn was almost certain why her dad was so upset. He had gone through her phone and he knew about her and Sam.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered, bringing her eyes up to meet his penetrating gaze. “I…”
“So, it’s true then? You’ve been fooling around with the football coach under my nose for the last few months?” he shouted, jumping up from the couch.
Quinn winced as he threw her phone against the wall, her eyes starting to brim with tears. She could hear her heart pounding in her ears. Was this really happening right now? It was like her worst nightmare had finally become a reality. No, her worst nightmare had become a reality.
“It’s not like that,” she started to explain herself, taking a step toward him. “Daddy, I…”
“My own daughter! Where did I go wrong? Where are those good Christian values that your mother and I taught you?” he questioned, desperate to believe that there was some kind of misunderstanding.
When Quinn remained silent, he knew that there wasn’t, so he tried another approach.
“Did he seduce you? Did he…?” he started to suggest, but Quinn cut him off, furious that he would even suggest such a thing.
“No! I made the first move!” she blurted out, trying to form coherent sentences as the tears came.
“You what?” Russell yelled, storming over to her now. “Who are you? What have you done to my baby girl?”
“I love him,” Quinn told him, shaking now that he was so close to her, but still not making a move to back down. “And he loves me too! I’m still the same person. I’m still your little girl.”
He shook his head and her tears just kept coming.
“No, you’re nothing to me or your mother anymore. You have half an hour to pack your things and go,” Russell informed her firmly.
Quinn shook her head repeatedly, not wanting to process his words. She looked past her father at her mother helplessly, but Judy continued to keep her head down, looking almost afraid to get involved.
“I’m sorry,” she repeated, the desperation in her voice clear. “I should never have kept my relationship with Sam from you, but that’s all I’m sorry for.”
She stood a little taller as she looked up at her dad. She was still shaking and the tears kept streaming down her porcelain cheeks, but her jaw was set in determination.
“I have no regrets and…” she trailed off, hesitating for a moment. “…and I’d do it all over again. He makes me happy, dad. He…”
“Stop,” Russell interrupted her, unable to stand anymore of her nonsense. “I want you out of my house. Now!”
“Daddy, please,” Quinn pleaded with him. “I’m still the same person. Why can’t you see that?”
The blonde turned to look at her mother again, addressing her this time.
“Mom, please,” she begged her, hoping that she would speak up and say something, anything. “Remember what you told me that night when dad was raging over Mr. Chang and Brittany? You told me that you felt bad about all of the hate they were getting because we don’t choose who we love. Mom, please. I love Sam. I really do.”
Judy instantly turned her head to look at her husband, who demanded an explanation from her.
“I never said that,” she insisted and Quinn’s face fell at her mother’s response.
“Yes! Yes you did!” the blonde protested, looking at her father again. It was clear that her dad thought she was lying, so she enlightened him, “He makes me happy. He’s made me happier in the last few months than either of you have my entire life!”
“Do not! Do not blame your mistake on us! We’ve given you more than enough of our love. We’ve done more than enough to make you happy. You are the disappointment here! You are the embarrassment in this family! We’ve done absolutely nothing wrong!” Russell pointed out to her. “Your sister certainly turned out to be someone we could be proud of.”
“I know! I’ve been the one who’s been living in her shadow for the last 18 years!” Quinn reminded him, starting to get really angry now. “And I’m sick of it!”
“Did you do this to punish us then?” Russell asked, red-faced. “Is that it?”
“Yeah, dad. That’s it,” Quinn sneered, done trying to reason with him. “That’s exactly why I’ve been carrying on a relationship with the football coach. Because I wanted to punish you and mom. In fact, I’ve been letting him screw me just to send both of you to an ear-”
Quinn brought a hand up to her throbbing face, the tears instantly starting to coming again. Her dad had never hit her before. She could still hear the sound of his hand making impact with the side of her face echoing in her ears. Slowly, she turned her head to look at him again. He seemed apologetic for a split second before his harsh demeanor returned. Her mother, of course, remained silent, her mouth hanging open, unable to believe that Russell had laid a hand on their daughter either. Wordlessly, the blonde turned on her heels and marched upstairs, packing her things just like her father had asked her to do. Anything Quinn didn’t need or wouldn’t miss, she left behind. Her father remained in the living room while she brought her bags out to her car. Her mother did too. Only when she was loading her last bag into the trunk, tears still streaming down her face, did Judy come running out to her.
“Quinnie,” she started, but the blonde cut her off with a single look.
Deep down, she’d always known that she’d lose her father if he ever found about her and Sam, but Quinn had had no idea that she’d lose her mother too.
“If you think I’m ever going to forget that you just sat there and watched him treat me like that,” Quinn said, trying to keep her voice steady, but her voice broke anyway. “You’re dreaming.”
She got into her car without waiting for a response, not expecting a response, and drove off. As she watched her mother grow smaller and smaller in her rearview mirror until she disappeared from view completely, heart wrenching sobs took over her body. She had gone over to Sam’s place earlier because she had missed him and was excited to see him again. Now, she was heading over there to seek solace in his arms.
